1 《Arles, the City of Light and Art》. Certain artists are so closely linked with particular places that it is hard to separate them. Arles and Van Gogh are like that. Arles is located five hours southeast of Paris and is well known for its magical light and colorful landscape. The most famous resident of this town was Vincent van Gogh. Leaving behind the gray skies of Paris, he arrived in Arles in 1888. The town inspired an explosion of creativity. Vincent claimed, "The whole future of art is to be found in the south of France." He worked enthusiastically and produced nearly 200 paintings in just fifteen months. None of Vincent's works are left in Arles now, but today you can see a number of them have been recreated in street-side panels. Let's follow Vincent's traces that remain in Arles.《아를, 빛과 예술의 도시》. 2 《The Roman Arena》. Arles is an ancient city dating back to Roman times. Many Roman buildings remain, including an arena that was built in 90 A.D. The arena used to seat over 20,000 people who would go to watch various entertaining events. Vincent sometimes went to the bullfights that were held in the arena every Sunday. He particularly liked to watch the colorful crowds. He told a friend that he found the crowds fascinating. They inspired the painting Arena at Arles. The arena is in the top right corner of the painting and is barely visible. Below, there is a faint image of two bulls. However, Vincent paid lots of attention to the people and their colorful clothes. Some of the people are chatting with friends, others are cheering on the bulls, and the entire painting has a powerful energy.《로마의 원형 경기장》. 3 《Cafe van Gogh》. Vincent painted the world-famous Cafe Terrace at Night in September 1888. He created this work while sitting outside the Cafe van Gogh at night. This was unusual because most painters did their night scenes from memory and worked during the daytime. As such, they used a lot of black paint. Vincent, however, believed that night scenes contained diverse and vibrant colors. Indeed, the Cafe Terrace at Night has such a rich harmony of yellows, blues, and oranges that Vincent did not have to use a single drop of black paint. Even today, there is still a cafe at the site of Vincent's painting. It was renovated in the 1990s and painted yellow to look like the cafe in the painting. However, it is uncertain whether the color of the original cafe was yellow or not. The reason is that Vincent painted the wall of the cafe yellow to show the lamp light.《카페 반 고흐》. 4 《Former Arles Hospital》 In December 1888, Vincent suffered from a mental illness and was sent to the hospital in Arles. He stayed there for five months. During this time, his mental stability improved, and the doctors allowed him to paint outdoors. Vincent took advantage of this freedom and produced several beautiful landscapes, such as The Garden of the Hospital in Arles. The picture illustrates a spring garden filled with flowers and trees with different colors and tones. The flowers are in full bloom, and the small trees are leafy. The big trees, however, have few leaves. This is rather odd given that the season is spring. Perhaps this contrast reflects the painter's complex feelings during the most difficult time of his life. The hospital closed in the 1980s, and the building reopened as a library and exhibition space, with a cafe and gift shops. The garden was renovated to resemble Vincent's painting as much as possible.《과거의 아를 병원》 1888년 12월, 빈센트는 정신 질환을 앓았고 아를의 병원으로 보내졌다. 5 Arles and its provincial countryside inspired Vincent to create brighter, more exciting landscapes. He had searched for brighter colors and softer light in Paris. In Arles, he found them. Today, more than 200 years later, this beautiful city remains just as attractive. The combination of Roman historic sites and Vincent's story creates a unique mood that will inspire you just as the city had inspired Vincent. 6 《The Impact of Light on Health》. Sunlight offers numerous health benefits. In small amounts, it boosts vitamin D levels, makes the bones stronger, prevents diseases, and heals skin conditions. Sunlight also affects mental health. Natural light causes the release of serotonin, a natural chemical the brain produces to promote happiness and pleasure and reduce depression and anxiety. On the other hand, reductions in sunlight are linked to panic attacks and anxiety-related disorders. However, the impact of light extends beyond sunlight. Colors created by artificial light can cause different emotions and have other effects on the body. Blue and white light energize us, but they can also disturb sleep patterns by lowering levels of melatonin, a chemical made in the brain that regulates night-and-day cycles and sleep-wake cycles. The brain has the most sensitivity to blue light. In contrast, red and yellow light are the least likely to impact our bodies. Exposure to red light in the evening can improve mental health by increasing the release of melatonin, which leads to better sleep at night. This improves people's cognitive abilities and overall mental health.《빛이 건강에 미치는 영향》. 7 《Why Fashion Needs to Be More Sustainable》. Jessi is a fashion blogger who loves unique, vibrant clothes. But guess what? She does not buy new clothes. Instead, she buys them secondhand. You may think secondhand clothes are old fashioned, but by buying them, Jessi can try different styles. She also does not get too attached to any style or brand because there is always another exciting outfit waiting to be discovered. Jessi's clothing habits are not just about creating a style; they are about saving the Earth. The reason is that her actions help reduce the production and consumption of clothes.《패션이 더 지속 가능해져야 하는 이유》. 8 Worth over $3 trillion and making up 2% of the world's GDP, the fashion industry today has an almost entirely linear approach. The process moves in a straight line from design to consumption to disposal. Material extraction, textile manufacturing, the supply chain, design, sales, marketing, and other steps are guided by the aim of maximizing garment consumption without considering other issues. Due to linear fashion, the fashion industry negatively affects the environment. 85% of textiles go into landfills, only 1% of the material is recycled, at least 500,000 tons of microfibers end up in the ocean (equal to 50 billion plastic bottles), and 93 billion cubic meters of water is required for textile production annually. Alarming numbers like these will keep increasing if producers maintain the old system. It is clear that waste and pollution from the fashion industry must be reduced. Linear fashion must change, and this could happen through circular fashion.3조 달러 이상의 가치를 지니며 세계 GDP의 2%를 차지하는 오늘날의 패션 산업은 거의 완전히 선형적인 접근 방식을 취하고 있다. 9 Circular fashion is inspired by the principles of a circular economy and sustainable development. A circular economy is based on limiting waste, keeping resources and materials in use, and reusing them. In a circular model, we make, use, and reuse materials for as long as possible to extract their maximum value. Therefore, clothing and textiles are produced, used, and reused to minimize waste. It is a renewable approach to reduce the fashion industry's environmental impact. Circular fashion provides numerous benefits. First, extending the lifespan of fibers significantly reduces textile waste, benefiting the environment. Second, circular processes utilize chemicals and materials safe for human health and the environment. This practice protects the environment and consumer health. Third, materials are regenerated instead of being disposed of, which enables their long-term use. 10 The rise of circular fashion is facilitated by new technology and ideas. Materials commonly used in clothing are not eco-friendly because they require considerable resources and often break down slowly. This creates a need for eco-friendly textile alternatives. Currently, companies are developing recycled fibers and fibers extracted from agricultural waste products like leaves, peels, and seeds. One company uses nanotechnology to make soft material from orange peels. Another makes fabrics from kapok tree seeds. The trees grow well in poor soil without needing much water. These new fabrics produce less waste, last a long time, and break down easily. In addition to these manufacturing techniques, technology will improve in such a way that it may become normal to produce clothes only when people order them. This "make-to-order" method will cost more, but then less money will be spent on maintaining offline stores. And 3D technology will enable people to see how clothes will fit online without trying them on in a store. In the long run, innovation in production and sales will facilitate sustainable fashion and considerably reduce material waste and logistics emissions. [22esk-304]
11 Another key to making fashion sustainable is the consumer: us. If we want the fashion industry to adopt more sustainable practices, we must care about how clothes come to us. We should then demonstrate our concerns through what we buy. The market, of course, will respond. We can also reduce waste by discarding clothes responsibly. To be specific, we should buy only what we need and pass clothing on to someone who will wear it or to a thrift shop when discarding it. Circular fashion will not solve every problem in the fashion industry overnight. However, small steps in the right direction are better than nothing. Keeping things in the supply chain for as many cycles as possible is really important. By making small changes to our clothing habits today, the fashion industry will gradually improve. After all, nothing is more fashionable than saving the planet. [22esk-305]
12 《Consumer Activism》. Consumer activism involves consumers taking actions to support or protest certain products or companies based on their ethical, environmental, or social concerns. A boycott is a form of protest in which individuals stop purchasing products from a particular company to express their objection to its practices. For example, in 2010, Greenpeace, an environmental support organization, initiated a campaign against a product of a food company, accusing the company of sourcing palm oil from companies involved in the destruction of forests. In response to Greenpeace's campaign and growing public pressure, the company agreed to cease sourcing palm oil from companies linked with the destruction of forests and commit to using sustainable palm oil by 2015. Today, a new form of consumer activism, known as a buycott, has emerged. In a buycott, consumers actively support companies in accord with their values by consciously buying their products. In 2020, an ice cream brand gained attention for its support of climate action. Consumers who shared this value actively purchased the ice cream, enhancing its reputation and sales. This inspired other brands to consider their social and environmental responsibilities. In this way, consumer activism empowers individuals to use their purchasing power and voices to promote positive change and hold businesses accountable for their actions.《소비자 운동》.
