Long ago, an honest merchant lived in Genoa, Italy. His name was Antonio, and he went to different places to support his family by trading. One day, he filled his ship with goods and visited a faraway island. There he traded tools for spices and books for nuts. Thanks to Antonio, the islanders could get what they needed. One night, Antonio had dinner with the island's queen at her palace. When dinner was served, rats appeared, and some servants chased them away with sticks. [m3cl-101]
Antonio was greatly surprised that there were rats in the palace. He asked, "Are there no cats on this island?"The queen looked puzzled. "What is a cat?" she asked. The merchant said to himself, "What the islanders here need is not tools or books, but cats."He brought two cats from his ship and let them run free. "What amazing animals!" cried the queen when she saw all the rats run away. She gave Antonio a chest that was filled with jewels. [m3cl-102]
Back in Italy, Antonio told his friends about his good fortune. Luigi, the richest merchant in Genoa, heard the story and was jealous. "Cats are worthless," Luigi thought. "I'll bring the queen what is really valuable. I'm sure that the queen will give me more jewels." Luigi packed his ship with wonderful paintings and other works of art. He took the gifts to the island. To get a chance to meet the queen, he told the islanders a lie that he was a good friend of Antonio's. When the queen heard about Luigi, she invited him to her palace for dinner. Before sitting down at the table, Luigi presented the queen with all his gifts, and the queen thanked him again and again. "I'll repay you with a priceless gift," said the queen. [m3cl-103]
Luigi watched the queen whisper in a servant's ear. He became excited and hopeful. He was sure that he would receive more jewels than Antonio. After a while, the servant returned with a box, and the queen presented it to Luigi. When Luigi opened the box, he was speechless. There was a kitten in the box. "Antonio gave us the priceless cats, and we now have some kittens," said the queen. "In return for the wonderful gifts you gave us, we want to give you what is most valuable to us." Luigi realized that, in the queen's mind, the kitten was worth far more than all the jewels in the world. He tried to look pleased with the gift. He knew that was the right thing to do. Luigi did not return home a richer man. But he was surely a wiser one. [m3cl-104]
For the science project, our group has chosen very special insects. They are very social. They are as old as the T-Rex. They appear in Aesop's stories. They use a special chemical to communicate. Can you guess what they are? Yes, the answer is ants. We want to share with you what we have learned about these insects. 6 We often see ants come out of nowhere. Like humans, they live almost everywhere in the world, except a few extremely cold places including Antarctica. As of 2018, there were over 7 billion people on Earth. Then, how about ants? According to scientists, there are about one million ants for every human in the world. Though each ant hardly weighs anything, one million ants are as heavy as a human being weighing about 62 kilograms. 7 Ants live in colonies which have lots of residents living together. Within a colony, there are usually three different types of ants. There is the queen, and what she does her entire life is lay eggs. The second type of ant is the male that helps the queen produce these eggs. The third type of ant is the worker. Worker ants are all female and do very important jobs, like caring for eggs, defending the colony, and collecting food. [m3cl-203]
Though ants do not speak like humans, they actually have a "language."Ants produce a chemical called a pheromone to communicate with one another. By using the chemical, they can exchange information about food or danger. Ants also use touch for communication. For example, if an ant finds food, it passes on the good news by rubbing its body on its neighbor. Since an ant has legs covered with very sensitive hairs, it can sense even the smallest touch. [m3cl-204]
Some queen ants live up to 30 years. Some ants can carry things that are 50 times their own body weight. Ants do not have lungs but breathe through small holes in their bodies. An ant has two stomachs. One stomach holds food for itself, and the other holds food to share with others. Most ants can swim and live 24 hours underwater. 10 Some people spend time with friends when they feel low. Others eat special foods to feel better. Still others simply sleep for a while. How do you deal with stress? Here are some stories about people who suggest different ways. Sometimes my friends give me stress by saying bad things about me, breaking promises, or arguing over small things. When this happens, I watch horror movies! Good horror movies are so scary that I scream a lot. I guess that screaming at the top of my lungs helps me feel better. Also, thanks to scary scenes and sound effects, I can forget about what bothers me. I've been using this method for the past several months, and it really works. 11 My uncle graduated from college two years ago. He lives with my family, and he's been looking for a job for some time. I know that he's stressed out, but he always tries to be positive by going fishing. He never gets upset when he doesn't catch any fish. He says, "While I fish, I'm so focused that I can leave all my worries behind. Besides, it teaches me to be patient."I'm sure that focusing on one thing helps us forget about something else. 12 My sister, a second-year student in high school, has a wonderful way to stay free from stress. She feels a lot of stress from schoolwork, but my mother seems to like the situation for a good reason. It is because cleaning is my sister's number-one way to make life better! When she's so stressed that her life looks gloomy, she cleans her room. She says, "As I clean my room, I feel like I'm also relieving stress. When my room looks tidy, my life looks brighter." [m3cl-303]
Let me tell you what my mother does about her stress. She feels stressed by all the things she has to do at work and at home. When she's under stress, she writes "Me Time" on her calendar. This means she takes some time out for herself. She reads a book, watches a movie, or talks with her friends. She says, "It doesn't really matter what I do, as long as it's something I like. I've been writing 'Me Time' on my calendar for two months, and I feel much better."Which methods will work for you? Try some of these ideas yourself, and find your best way to say goodbye to stress. 14 Honeybees are important insects because they help plants produce fruits and seeds. In fact, honeybees are responsible for about one-third of the food crops in the U.S. However, many bees are suffering from a bacterial disease. This disease can destroy large bee families with about 60,000 bees. So, a company developed a vaccine to protect the bees! Instead of giving the bees a shot, the medicine is mixed into the queen bee's food. When the queen eats it, the medicine goes into her eggs, and helps to protect other bees from the disease. The vaccine was introduced at the right moment for honeybees. The bees are very important for the world's food production, but they are disappearing due to losing their homes, climate change, and pesticides, in addition to a bacterial disease. Thanks to the vaccine, more bees can continue their important work of spreading pollen and producing honey. 15 People with color blindness cannot experience the beautiful colors of fall leaves. Imagine that they saw these colors for the first time. How amazing would that be? There are over 13 million colorblind Americans. The state of Tennessee wanted to help them see the beautiful fall colors. In 2017, the state installed special viewfinders in 12 places. Red-green color blindness is the most common type, and these viewfinders help people see the difference between these colors more clearly. Van Lew, who has been colorblind her whole life, looked through one of these special viewfinders. For the first time, she saw yellows, oranges, and reds. She said, "It's the most beautiful thing I've ever seen in my life." Tennessee was the only state with colorblind viewfinders, but in 2023, a viewfinder was also installed at a park in Virginia. Tennessee hopes that more viewfinders will be available across the country. 16 A famous sculpture titled "Balloon Dog (Blue)" was accidentally broken by a visitor. It wasn't made of real balloons! The artist behind this sculpture is Jeff Koons, who has inspired many young artists. He likes to use everyday things in his art, such as toys and vacuum cleaners. After finishing art school in 1976, he moved to New York and worked at the Museum of Modern Art. His art during this time was fun and used things like balloons. He believed that art should make people happy and bring them together. Koons also made a stainless steel rabbit, which is one of his most famous sculptures from the 1980s. This sculpture that stands 104 centimeters tall might look like a toy, but is much more than that. The shiny surface of his "Rabbit" acts like a mirror, so this makes people see their reflection and think about themselves. It has become one of the most famous works of 20th-century art, and was sold for $91.1 million! 17 In Australia, there's a bird called the white ibis. People nicknamed them the "bin chicken," because they search trash cans for food or even snatch food from people's hands. But now, these birds are helping to solve a big problem — the cane toad. Cane toads were introduced to Australia in the 1930s. Farmers thought they would help control beetles damaging their crops. However, these toads spread rapidly, consuming many insects. Moreover, their strong poison could kill most native animals that eat frogs and toads. They became a threat to native wildlife because they had no natural enemies in Australia. Fortunately, the white ibis learned a way to eat them safely. The ibises flip the toads into the air, causing the toads to release their poison. They then wash them in water before eating. This way, they're helping control the number of cane toads. In fact, each cane toad that a white ibis eats prevents the birth of about 70,000 new toads in a year!
