I watched the beautiful stretch of the shoreline as it floated into view. How wonderful it was! After two days at sea, I finally saw the land of infinite opportunities. There it was before me ― smiling and inviting. It was difficult for anyone to decline that invitation. I was full of great plans to find success in this unknown land. I had accepted a job offer from Dr. Gilbert, who had opened a medical clinic at an inland village last year. It gave me great pleasure to think about how my dream would become a reality. I looked again at the coast. The line of distant mountains and shapes of houses were gradually emerging through the mist. They welcomed me with endless promises.::나는 물에 떠 있는 것처럼 보이는 아름답게 뻗어있는 해안선을 보았다. 얼마나 아름다운 해안선이었던가! 바다에서 이틀을 보낸 후에, 나는 마침내 무한한 기회의 땅을 보았다. 거기에 그것이 (내게) 웃으며 (나를) 초대하는 것처럼 내 앞에 있었다. 그러니 누구라도 그런 초대를 거절하는 것은 어려웠다. 나는 이 미지의 땅에서 성공을 찾고자 하는 많은 대단한 계획들을 세웠다. 나는 작년에 내륙에 있는 마을에서 병원을 개원한 Gilbert 박사로부터 온 취업 제안을 받아들였다. 내 꿈이 어떻게 현실이 될 것인가에 대해 생각해 보는 것은 내게 대단한 기쁨을 주었다. 나는 다시 그 해변을 보았다. 멀리 일렬로 솟아 있는 산과 집처럼 보이는 것이 안개를 뚫고 점차 모습을 드러냈다. 그것들은 끝없는 가능성과 함께 나를 반겨주었다.
