The Icelandic horse is a breed of horse developed in Iceland. Although the horse is small, at times pony-sized, it's a sturdy animal perfectly suited to the rough Icelandic terrain. The first horses were introduced by the early settlers and, since no other horses have been imported recently, the breeding stock remains pure. From the first years of settlement in Iceland to the early part of this century, these horses were the primary form of transportation in the country. Horsefights were organized as a source of entertainment and the meat was consumed as a staple. Even today the horse is still used for traditional farm work, as well as for leisure activities.::아이슬란드 말은 아이슬란드에서 시작된 말의 한 종이다. 이 말은 때로는 조랑말 정도의 크기만큼 작지만, 거친 아이슬란드 지형에 완전히 적합한 튼튼한 동물이다. 최초의 말들은 초기 정착민들에 의해 도입되었고, 다른 말들이 최근까지 수입되지 않았기 때문에, 번식용 가축은 순종인 상태로 남아 있다. 아이슬란드에 정착한 초기에서 현세기의 초기까지 이 말들은 이 나라에서 주요 교통수단이었다. 말싸움은 오락용으로 조직되었고 고기는 주식으로 소비되었다. 그 말은 여전히 현재에도 여가 활동뿐만 아니라 전통적인 농사일에도 이용된다.
