Human beings have always had the capacity to think spatially ― this is here, that is there ― even though not everybody chooses to express this understanding in mapmaking. The capacity to form mental maps must have been essential for the early humans. Hunter-gatherers, for instance, recognized the routes of the migratory animals and the best places to hunt them down even without a physical map. Wandering tribesmen needed to know how they could cross deserts safely without dying of thirst. All these people would have carried a map of their land in their head.::비록 모든 사람들이 지도 제작에 그런 이해력을 표현하기로 선택하지는 않지만, 인간은 공간적으로, 즉 이것은 여기에 있고, 저것은 저기에 있다고 생각하는 능력을 항상 지녀왔다.
