The gap between the reality of online life and how we experience it prevents our discussion of Internet privacy. Consider email. People "know" email is not private. And yet many will use email, at least sometimes, for intimate correspondence. Over decades, I have asked why. The answer is always the same: When you stare at a screen, you feel completely alone. That sense of being alone with the person to whom you are writing―as though you were the only two people in the world―often blocks out what you know to be true.
