Benjamin Franklin once suggested that a newcomer to a neighborhood ask a new neighbor to do him or her a favor, citing an old maxim: He that has once done you a kindness will be more ready to do you another than he whom you yourself have obliged. In Franklin's opinion, asking someone for something was the most useful and immediate invitation to social interaction. Such asking on the part of the newcomer provided the neighbor with an opportunity to show himself or herself as a good person, at first encounter. It also meant that the latter could now ask the former for a favor, in return, increasing the familiarity and trust. In that manner, both parties could overcome their natural hesitancy and mutual fear of the stranger.::Benjamin Franklin은 예전에 '너에게 친절을 행한 적이 있는 사람은 네가 친절을 베풀었던 사람보다도 너에게 또 다른 친절을 행할 준비가 더 되어 있을 것이다'라는 옛 격언을 인용하며 동네에 새로 온 사람은 새 이웃에게 도움을 요청해야 한다고 제안했다.
