No matter how you choose to delineate your evolutionary system of interest ─ let's say it's cell phones ─ there will be some things that your model just needs to take as a given, such as the fact that new ideas emerge at particular times. Indeed, all models must make simplifying assumptions of this nature. When Wallace and Darwin presented their verbal model of biological evolution, there was little knowledge of how variation generation and inheritance worked. They just took as a given that these things happened somehow. Even at the finest level of detail, we need simplifying assumptions. Physicists, for example, must take as a given the mass and charge of fundamental particles. In a model of atomic bonds, physicists don't attempt to explain why electrons have their particular mass and charge, they just accept the measured values and move on. The key point is that we can build useful models at one level of analysis without a complete accounting of what's happening at all other levels.::여러분이 관심을 두는 진화 시스템(예를 들어 휴대 전화와 같은)의 경계를 어떻게 정할지 선택하든 간에 이를테면 새로운 아이디어가 특정한 시기에 출현한다는 사실 같은, 여러분의 모델이 그저 주어진 것으로 받아들여야만 하는 어떤 것들이 있을 것이다.
