Increased community engagement by professional journalists, on their own, will not solve the problem of making the news more relevant to everyone because traditional news organizations already have abandoned many communities, leaving behind news deserts. In those places, citizens must take up the responsibility for discovering information, holding the powerful accountable, and telling the news for themselves and their neighbors. The democratization of information ─ through the disruptions caused by computers and the internet ─ allows citizens to retake control of local news in ways that never have existed before, and it calls them to take greater care in the gathering and dissemination of what they discover or think they know. Journalism, perhaps like never before, belongs to the people rather than to professional journalists, wealthy publishers, or even corporate shareholders. The same technology that has shifted the balance of power toward the people gives them the tools to act as broadcasters and publishers of information essential to their immediate community ─ and, more critically, to serve as gatekeepers to information for other people around them.::전문 언론인들이 지역 사회에 점점 더 관여하는 것은 그 자체로 뉴스를 모든 사람에게 더 관련성 있게 만드는 문제를 해결하지 못할 것인데, 전통적인 뉴스 기관들이 이미 많은 지역 사회를 버리고 떠나 뉴스 사막을 남겨두었기 때문이다. 그런 지역에서는 시민들이 정보를 찾아내고 권력층의 책임을 추궁하며, 그들 자신과 그들의 이웃을 위한 뉴스를 전달하는 책임을 맡아야 한다. 컴퓨터와 인터넷에 의해 초래된 (기술) 격변을 통한 정보 민주화는 시민들이 이전에는 없었던 방식으로 지역 뉴스 통제권을 되찾도록 해주고, 그들이 발견하거나 안다고 생각하는 것의 수집과 전파에 대해 더욱 신중할 것을 요구한다. 언론은 아마도 전에 없이 전문 언론인, 부유한 (신문) 발행인, 혹은 심지어 기업 주주들이 아니라 일반 시민에게 속한다. 일반 시민에게로 권력의 균형을 이동시킨 그 동일한 기술이 그들에게 인근 지역 사회에 필수적인 정보의 방송사와 발행인 역할을 하는, 더 중요하게는 그들 주변의 다른 사람들을 위한 정보 문지기 역할을 하는 도구를 제공한다.
