Because belief is so crucial in the placebo effect, it would seem that deception is necessary in order to trigger a patient's trust in the actual drug he might be taking. But Ted Kaptchuk, a leading placebo researcher at Harvard, is investigating the possibility of doing away with the element of deception. He tells patients up front that they will be taking a placebo, but he also informs them about how powerful and effective placebos can be. In one trial with irritable bowel syndrome, it was found that roughly 59 percent of those on an open placebo treatment reported improvements, as compared with 35 percent of the control group that received no treatment. The results may seem modest, but they make the point that giving a placebo isn't the same as doing nothing.::위약 효과에서 믿음은 매우 중요하기 때문에, 환자가 복용하게 될 수 있는 실제 약에 대한 신뢰를 유발하기 위해서는 속임수가 필요한 듯 보일 것이다.
